In March of 2020, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian, made a daring statement about the origin of the Novel Coronavirus ( COVID-19). He blamed the United States of America (USA) army, for introducing the virus into his country. This statement came on the heels of the US President, Donald Trump’s characterization of the virus which has its origin in the Chines city of Wuhan, as the China Virus. Its publication was not by some tabloid or science fiction magazine, it was facilitated by major mainstream media houses, in the US.
Normally, a statement promoting a conspiracy theory, coming from anyone else, would be viewed as just that, a conspiracy theory, but this allegation, emanated from a high ranking official in the Chinese Government, which evidently carried with it much weight, and might have helped to solidify the view of many conspiracy theorists that it is factual, further fanning the flame of skepticism of any explanation given by global organizations about the virus’ origin.
Zhao Lijian, with those few words, had essentially opened a can of worms. He was, however, short on specifics and details, just information that was essentially good enough for a clickbait.
Thus facilitating a fertile ground for suspicion and incredulity. A conspiracy theory essentially, “is a belief that some covert but influential organization is responsible for an unexplained event”, it is not one that is based on fact, but one’s belief.
The unfortunate thing is that in many of these cases the proponents try to use plausible rational responses to a conspiracy theory to validate it.
In other words, their perspective as to the causes, effects & origin of a subject matter, is fitted into a theory to rationalize it, oftentimes without any solid proof, and this is what makes it dangerous.
It can essentially be a mechanism and a conduit to facilitate distrust in government and create hysteria. A pandemic like COVID-19 is a virus that has provided the right environment in which it can thrive. While I have no proof that Mr. Lijian was not being factual he has not provided any proof to validate his claims.
So one is left to be guided by one’s judgement as to whether to believe him or not. In a world where citizens in various countries are suspicious of government because of their constant duplicity about their engagements, conspiracy theories can only make bad situations worse.
The conspiracy about COVID-19, did not start with Mr. Lijian’s statement, in fact, there have been many prior to his declaration.
Some have stated it was the introduction of 5G technology or some experiment went wrong and a virus escaped from the Chines lab.
Some of the stories and videos being circulated are so dramatic they are beyond belief.
China incidentally, has been one of the leading developers in 5G technology and they have been at odds with the American Government. As a result, the US had informed its technology companies about the potential security risk that the Chines can pose with its dominance of 5G technology.
This concern was raised by the US Attorney General William P. Barr, insinuating that it might be a Trojan horse to infiltrate the US, as a mechanism for espionage.
The smart money would say that the US might be concerned that China might first them in the global space with the technology.
He who dominates the technological space wields enormous power. The US has demonstrated its concern and have recommended to one of its closest ally, the United Kingdom, who has decided to use 5G technology in some of its technology, not to use it.
The UK instead has stated that the technology would not be used in national security-sensitive areas. Could it be that the 5G conspiracy theory was generated specifically to thwart the Chinese dominance?
I would suggest to you that many conspiracy theorists are of the opinion that this is the case.
Be that as it may, in a world that has seen developed countries seeking to maintain dominance and the mechanism of biological warfare a reality, it is not too farfetched that there is the likely possibility that this theory may just be factual.
However, in the absence of (a) any supporting fact concerning COVID-19’s origin (b) the reality that this pandemic is taking lives across borders,© that it does not distinguishes between race, gender or political affiliation, dealing with it should be a priority.
Survival of humanity should be paramount at the back of our minds. The COVID-19 conspiracy theory is inconsequential.
